How to Process UNISA Application 2023-2024

Applications for admission to undergraduate qualifications (higher certificates, advanced certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas & degrees) for the 2023-2024 academic year will be open from 1 September to 30 November.

Everyone wanting to start a new qualification must apply for admission. This includes

first-time Unisa applicants
Unisa students changing to a new qualification and/or specialisation
applicants who previously applied for admission and were not offered a space or who were offered a space accepted the offer and did not register
students completing a higher certificate or any other programme and who wish to continue with further undergraduate studies

All applications for admission must be submitted online during the prescribed application period.

Applicants who plan to enrol for classes at a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college under the Unisa-TVET agreement may apply via the relevant TVET college or at Unisa via the online or self-help options.

How to Check UNISA Application Deadline 2023-2024

Unisa is known as a provider of fair and equitable access to higher education opportunities. Flowing from its social responsibility to address past inequalities, Unisa has an application and selection process that effectively addresses historical imbalances without sacrificing quality standards.

This process promotes focused attention towards improved student support, and the alignment of our new student intake with the available academic capacity and required infrastructure to maximise all students’ chances of success.

What does the selection process entail?

At the heart of the selection process is a calculation of your individual points score, which takes into account your final Grade 12 marks and other key factors such as the school you attended, and your gender, socio-economic group, race, and so on.
Before submitting an application, please check whether you meet the statutory and college-specific admission requirements, and the required academics points score (APS) for your chosen qualification(s). A higher certificate requires a minimum APS of 15, a diploma minimum APS of 18 and a bachelor’s degree with a minimum APS of 21 or more (some exceptions apply).
It is important to note that you will not automatically be accepted to study through Unisa in semester 1 of 2023-2024. Students will be accommodated on the basis of the number of places available for each qualification.

The application process

You may apply for a maximum of two qualifications, ranked in order of preference (although you may only register for one should both of your qualifications be successful).
Unisa will inform you of the outcome of your application. If successful, Unisa will indicate for which qualification you have been accepted and will offer you a space for the period for which you have applied (ie semester 1).
You must accept or decline Unisa’s offer within the prescribed period of time. If you miss this deadline, Unisa will withdraw the offer and give your space to another applicant.
First-time applicants to Unisa will be required to complete the First-Year Experience (FYE) MOOC (massive open online course) before being able to accept Unisa’s offer.
You may only accept one offer. This means that when you accept an offer for one qualification (irrespective of whether it is your first or second qualification of choice), the other offer will automatically fall away.
If you accept Unisa’s offer, you must register for the period for which you have been granted admission (ie semester 1). Should you not register for the relevant semester of study, you will need to re-apply for admission during the next application period.

Who must apply?

If you are completing a higher certificate or alternative pathway / extended programme, you must apply for admission if you want to continue with further undergraduate studies.
You must re-apply for admission if you previously applied for admission and were offered a space, but did not accept the offer and/or did not register for any reason.
Everyone planning to enrol for classes at a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college under the Unisa-TVET agreement must apply for admission.

Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) is a different way of learning

ODeL is a different way of learning… there is a physical distance between you and your university. For most of us, this means that our previous learning experiences will not have prepared us for the Unisa study journey. In open-distance e-learning, YOU are responsible for your studies. You don’t attend daily lectures. You learn from a distance and you connect to the university mostly via the internet.

But this doesn’t mean that you are on your own. Unisa has a number of support services for our students – from tutorial support and counselling to online tools. The “distance” in open distance e-learning means that most of your interactions with Unisa will take place at a distance – mostly in a digital format.

Many of us don’t know what it’s really like to study through open-distance e-learning, because most of our schooling and post-school education was completed through contact or face-to-face learning.

Everyone wanting to start a new qualification must apply for admission, including first-time Unisa applicants, Unisa students changing to a new qualification and/or changing the specialisation of their current qualification, and applicants in their final year of an undergraduate qualification who wish to continue with postgraduate studies.

Please take note of the following:

Unisa will accept applications for admission to the 2023-2024 academic year from 1 September to 15 December (CTA programmes have an earlier closing date). Additional application dates may be announced if there are still spaces available for the 2023-2024 academic year.
All applications for admission must be submitted online. No self-help stations will be available for applications at the regional offices.
Admission to a qualification is not automatic. It will depend on whether you comply with the admission requirements and if space is available.
Only complete applications will be processed.

Please note:

If you are a first-time Unisa applicant and do not have a myLife e-mail address, Unisa will communicate with you via the e-mail address and cellphone number you provided during the application period.
If you were previously registered with Unisa, Unisa will send the outcome of your application to your myLife e-mail account. Please check this e-mail account regularly for information. If you have forgotten your myUnisa / myLife password, please go to myUnisa (https://my.unisa.ac.za) to update your password.
Unisa provides all registered students with a free myLife e-mail address. It is your responsibility to activate your myLife e-mail account as soon as your registration is finalised. Your myLife e-mail account will be the only e-mail account recognised by Unisa for official correspondence to and from the university and will remain the official primary e-mail address on record at Unisa. Unisa does not provide scanners or electronic devices. Please ensure that your documents are scanned and uploaded to an electronic device before starting the application process.

Pay the application fee once you’ve received a student number from Unisa

R115 for online applications
The application fee is only applicable to students who do NOT have a formal Unisa student number.
Use the student number you receive from Unisa AND the application fee reference number (ie STUDENT NUMBER 5370810030)

This fee is non-refundable even if you decide not to study through Unisa or do not qualify for admission to Unisa. Unisa does not accept cash at any of its offices.

The due date for the application fee is the closing date for the application period. Any application submitted without an application fee will not be processed. Please ensure that you keep a copy of your proof of payment.

Make sure that your application is complete

If your application for admission to study through Unisa is incomplete, you will have to re-apply during the next application period.
