The Department of Higher Education & Training’s TVET Colleges Bursary Scheme has been established to give financial assistance to students who have the potential to succeed in NCV or NATED (Report 191) Studies. Still, it would not be able to do so without financial aid. This scheme is administered by NSFAS (National Students Financial Aid Scheme).
A National Means Test Tool determines who qualifies for the bursary. Students, who do not qualify for the NSFAS bursary, will have to pay the full appropriate tuition fees.
Who is eligible for the TVET College Bursary Scheme?
You are eligible to apply for the bursary if you are:

A South African Citizen,

Registered or intend to register for NCV or NATED (Report 191) Programme,
In need of financial assistance,
Able to demonstrate potential for academic success.
Will the bursary fund cover all eligible students who apply?

No. It is not possible for the bursary to cover all students in the college due to the limited bursary funding available.

Will students awarded bursaries have to pay the money back after completing their studies?

No. TVET College students do not have to pay the money back as it is a bursary allocation and not a loan.

What are the documents that students have to submit when applying for a bursary?

  • 4 certified copies of the student’s ID
  • Both parents/ Guardian’s Certified ID copies
  • Both parents/guardians have proof of income (latest payslips/pension card/child support grant card)
  • Certified copy of death certificates in the event that mother and father are deceased
  • Certified copy of your landlord’s ID copy if renting private accommodation.

Does a bursary holder automatically qualify for a bursary at the end of each Level / Trimester / Semester? NO

Report 191 Programmes – Must have passed 3 subjects out of 4
NCV – Must have passed 5 subjects out of 7
If a student has been granted a bursary and does not progress to the next level, is he/she still eligible for a bursary? NO
Students who do not meet the criteria to progress to the next level of study are viewed as repeaters and will not qualify for Financial Aid. Students, who wish to enrol, repeat a level or switch to another programme, will be expected to finance their studies.

Switching between different Programs (“Program Hopping”)
According to the DHET TVET College Bursary Scheme rules and guidelines 2015 – Pg 10, paragraph 14.14: “With effect from 2013, bursary recipients who switch from one programme to another (i.e. from NCV to Report 191 programme or vice-versa) during the course of their studies are not eligible for financial assistance.

Furthermore, bursary recipients who complete NCV Level 4 are not eligible for financial assistance should they want to enrol for Report 191 programme N1-N3; similarly bursary recipients who complete Report 191 N6 are not eligible for financial assistance should they want to enrol for an NCV programme.

However, bursary recipients who complete NCV L4 are eligible for financial assistance should they want to enrol for Report 191 N4-N6. ”

Financial Aid is linked to academic performance, financial need and class attendance. The Attendance Policy of 80% attendance will be adhered to.
