Afda Undergraduate Bursaries 2023

AFDA, The School for the Creative Economy, has been working on developing a bursary fund that will provide partial to full bursaries for young creatives from disadvantaged backgrounds and limited opportunities to secure finance to take on further education. This fund began with a GoFundMe campaign earlier in 2019 where the money raised was the start of officially building the fund. Now to further develop the sources of the fund, all contributions received via the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet fundraising programme will be allocated directly to the fund. Once sufficient funds have been raised, a partial or full bursary will be allocated for an applicant from a disadvantaged background qualifying to enrol at AFDA. Further details of the application process and criteria for this bursary are to be announced once the fund can sufficiently cover one bursary.

Since AFDA’s early beginnings, the institution has held and continues to hold a strong position and tradition of providing bursaries needed to develop a future creative economy that is a true reflection of the South African demographic and impacts positively on nation-building. Over the past 5 years alone, AFDA has spent 25 million ZAR providing bursaries to young creatives through AFDA’s Development Bursaries on its Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth campuses within the Postgraduate programmes.

Considering how in recent years, the creative economy has become an increasingly significant contributor to the South African and African Gross Domestic Product (GDP), sufficient access to funding for the development and training of emerging African talent to serve future growth is limited, completely out-weighing the growing demand from young creatives wanting to study and invest in developing their skills.

We believe in the future of the creative economy and working on increasing opportunities to develop and educate young creatives in ways that are sustainable and contribute to nation-building. If you would like to support the AFDA Bursary Fund, please add AFDA as a beneficiary on your MySchool account. This may appear under the registered name AFDA, The South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance.

About the MySchool Programme

The MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet fundraising programme is one of South Africa’s biggest community programmes. They raise funds for schools, charities and environmental organisations through a card system that allows supporters to raise funds for their beneficiary (school or charity) every time they shop at our partner stores. Partners make a contribution, on behalf of the supporter/cardholder, towards the beneficiary they have selected.

The system allows cardholders to make a difference to a worthy cause without it costing them a cent! The MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet programme raises more than R4 million per month for the schools, charities, animal welfare and environmental organisations it supports.

How does MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet work?

More than 700 000 South Africans carry MySchool cards.

Supporters apply for a free MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet card and select up to 3 schools and/or charities as their beneficiaries.

When they purchase items from participating retailers they swipe the card with the purchase.

A percentage of their transaction is then allocated to their beneficiary.

The partner stores pay the contribution on behalf of the cardholder. All these transactions are recorded and a statement is sent to individual supporters on a monthly basis. The supporter card is not a credit or debit card but simply tracks transactions and funds raised.

Where can you swipe my MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet card?

The success of the programme depends on the number of times you swipe your card. Supporters can use their cards at a range of national, regional and local retail partners on the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet system. Some of the national partners include:
