About Us

The Department offers Arabic, French, German, Latin and Classical Culture from the first year, which is a foundation course, to the second and third year levels, which are divided into modules. There are no languages requirements for any of these languages, although a knowledge of grammar terms will be helpful. A National Senior Certificate is all that is required; however, if a student has done one of these languages at Matric level, they may be exempted from doing the first year, and can do the course at second year level. However, a test will be administered by a lecturer early in the year just to ascertain whether the potential student is in fact ready for second year.

Why study a foreign language?

Those of you taking Linguistics as a major or wish to become language teachers, learning a language other than your mother-tongue is an excellent way to understand how languages “work”.

If you are planning a career in Tourism in South Africa, being fluent in at least two foreign languages is a distinct advantage. Even if you are not thinking of a career in particular at this stage, learning a new language can open up new worlds to you – it is like travelling the world from the lecture room at UWC.

Foreign languages on your c.v. are always a recommendation
